Susanne Kessel invited 250 composers from all over the world to write new piano pieces for Beethoven's 250th anniversary in the year 2020. All pieces refer to Beethoven's music and/or his life.
Susanne Kessel played the world premieres of all the piano pieces in Beethoven's birthtown Bonn. And further performances also in other cities and countries.

All pieces are published within a high quality sheet music edition by EDITIONS MUSICA FERRUM / London.

Sascha Janko Dragićević über sein piano piece „20 b“:

„Grundlage von "20 b“ ist die Variation Nr. 20 der Diabelli-Variationen von Beethoven. Es handelt sich um eine Variation über diese Variation.

Der Begriff „Grundlage“ ist wörtlich zu verstehen: das Original ist durchgehend in unterschiedlich stark veränderter Form vorhanden. So sind die ersten 16 Takte um zwei Oktaven nach oben gelegt, einzelne Töne der Akkorde sind chromatisch versetzt. Die Zeitstruktur hingegen bleibt unverändert. Diese leicht manipulierte Grundschicht wird nun gleichsam übermalt. In die Beethoven’schen Kanons und Imitationen schieben sich weitere dichte Kanons, welche die Harmonien nicht nur anwachsen lassen, sondern diese auch in meine eigene Sprachlichkeit und somit ins Jahr 2019 überführen. Über die kontemplativen Akkordprogressionen schichten sich des weiteren seltsame Fremdkörper. Dies sind zunächst nur einzelne kurze Töne, aus denen zunehmend figurative Gestalten anwachsen.

Gegen Ende bricht für kurze Momente der originale Beethoven’sche Satz durch, im fortissimo, anstatt wie im Original im piano, als wolle dieser sich vehement Gehör verschaffen. Es ist dies die Schlusskadenz über dem Grundton der Tonart C-dur. Die Fremdkörper führen dazu, dass der Beethoven’sche Satz wieder zum piano wechselt, in dem Moment, in dem die Subdominante vermollt wird, kurz für sich steht und über dominantische Gefüge schließlich zum Schluss führt: einem Gemisch aus C-dur und C-moll.

Die Variation Nr. 20 erfüllt eine wichtige dramaturgische Funktion in den Diabelli-Variationen. Betrachten wir das kleine Stück losgelöst von seinem monumentalen Kontext, so erkennen wir vielleicht noch deutlicher seine Sonderbarkeit, die mich angezogen und zu meiner kleinen Komposition veranlasst hat.“
