"250 piano pieces for Beethoven"

German pianist Susanne Kessel invited 250 composers from all over the world to write new piano pieces for Beethoven's 250th anniversary in the year 2020. All pieces refer to Beethoven's music and/or his life.

Susanne Kessel plays the world premieres of all the piano pieces in Beethoven's birthtown Bonn. And further performances also in other cities and countries.

All pieces are published within a high quality sheet music edition by EDITIONS MUSICA FERRUM / London.

Martin Tchiba about his piano piece „LUDWIG – directions“:

„Mein viersätziges ,LUDWIG – directions‘ für Klavier solo wirft aus der Jetzt-Perspektive vier kurze, aber intensive Blicke auf Ludwig van Beethoven. Das gesamte Tonmaterial des Werks leitet sich vom ,Rondo – Allegro‘ der ,Grande Sonate Pathétique‘ ab.
Der III. Satz von ,LUDWIG – directions‘ reflektiert auf Beethoven als radikalen Verdichter kompositorischer Strukturen und somit Wegbereiter wesentlicher Kompositionstechniken des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts: In diesem Sinne wurden in diesem Satz Tonhöhen, Rhythmus und Dynamik nach einem strengen seriellen Verfahren ermittelt. Die ,Reihen-Basis‘ hierfür bilden wiederum bestimmte aus Beethovens ,Rondo – Allegro‘ extrahierte numerische Gesetzmäßigkeiten.
Der II. Satz hingegen bezieht sich auf eine im weitesten Sinne ,romantische‘ Deutung Beethoven’scher Musik, deren Ausläufer bis in die Popkultur reichen.
Beide Mittelsätze von ,LUDWIG – directions‘ (II. und III.) formen aus dem jeweiligen Blickwinkel ein eigenständiges Stück Musik; darin ist keinerlei Wertung oder Präferenz für die eine oder andere Richtung enthalten, die der Umgang mit Beethovens Musik im Laufe der Geschichte genommen hat.
Die beiden Ecksätze I. und IV. sind persönliche Annäherungen von mir an Beethoven in meiner aktuellen eigenen Tonsprache (das ,Material‘ meines liebsten Beethovens, des ,Pathétique‘-Schlusssatzes, bleibt omnipräsent), wobei beide im II. und III. Satz beleuchteten ,Tendenzen‘ durchaus ihre Wirkung entfalten.“
